About the Beans : Rwanda - Isano

The Isano is rooted in the fertile hillsides surrounding Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, where volcanic soil and high elevations create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Here, hundreds of smallholder farmers nurture their coffee trees with care, contributing to a collective story of resilience and renewal.

The name Isano means “five” in Kinyarwanda, chosen to honour the five washing stations that work together to produce this lot. It symbolises unity, collaboration, and the shared determination of communities that have faced hardship yet continue to rebuild and thrive.

What makes Isano special is not only the landscape of Lake Kivu but also the spirit of the people who live and work there. For many families, coffee has become more than a crop - it is a pathway to education, stability, and opportunity. The Isano lot captures this collective effort, standing as a testament to Rwanda’s ability to transform challenges into strength and progress.
